A brief presentation of the conundrum of performing substantive research on metal-organic frameworks at a primarily teaching, undergraduate HBCU, will be presented. Such universities, which do not typically yield much flexibility in time due to the plethora of roles and responsibilities expected of the faculty, require a deliberate effort toward balancing commitments to teaching, student advising and mentoring and research. An approach to thriving in this time-restrictive environment and the results thereof will be articulated after approximately one academic year of NSF-funded research on the water purification properties of highly stable, nanoparticle-doped MOFs. The approach includes: 1) weekly block-out times; 2) a strong student mentoring model; 3) clear, short, and realistic goals for research progress; 4) focused research periods designated before and after periods of heavy semester activity.
