Wool products have been widely used in people’s daily life due to their various excellent properties. However, long-time exposure to the sun radiation containing ultraviolet light (UV) has caused serious photoyellowing and phototendering issues. Besides, when used to fabricate apparel, wool fabrics are always expected to own a UV-blocking feature to protect skin underneath. In this study, to reduce the photoyellowing and meanwhile improve UV-blocking feature of wool fabrics, we have developed a facile treatment by introducing aminobenzoic acid, a vitamin-like substance with high absorbance in the UVB region. The attachment of aminobenzoic acid was realized through a microbial enzyme mediated acyl transfer reaction between primary amine on aminobenzoic acid and glutamine residues in proteins. This reaction was conducted in a buffer at mild condition. The obtained modified wool fabrics will be first tested their ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) values, and after accelerated weathering via a Fade-Ometer, the yellowness and whiteness index will also be carefully characterized. Furthermore, tensile test will be conducted in an MTS testing machine. We expect that by utilizing our enzyme-based reaction system, effective modification of wool fabrics can be processed at moderate conditions, and the corresponding products will have better radiation-resistant properties.
