Emil Fischer, a premier organic chemist of the era, is renowned for his work on barbiturates; specifically, by discovering the more potent hypnotic properties of 5,5-diethyl-barbituric acid along with colleague Josef Freiherr von Mering. This work was at the forefront for a group of drugs that had hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and sedative effects. This drug group, which came to be known as “barbiturates,” amounted to more than 2500 different analogues and were synthesized and used for both their psychiatric and neurological functions. Considering the wide-ranging effects that barbiturates possessed, and taking into account Fischer’s extensive research on barbiturate analogues, research on small-molecule, sugar-based barbiturates has seemingly scarcely been explored.<br/>The work we are pursuing, revisits barbiturate derivatives; specifically, disaccharide sugars lined by C6 of one of the sugars to barbituric acid. The analogs subsequent effects both immunologically – as an immunoadjuvant against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) – and neurologically – as a hypnotic and sedative will be studied.
