A traditional lab course in advanced inorganic chemistry has been updated with the incorporation of a multiweek investigation.  The investigation focused on the fluxional behavior of the ligands on eight-coordinate rhenium(V) tetrahydride complexes supported by an <i>ortho</i>-metalated benzaldimine ligand and two triphenylphosphine ligands.  The goals of the research experience included student participation in experiment design, introduction of Schlenk techniques for inert atmosphere synthesis, preparation of an organic reactant, characterization of a new organometallic product, experience with variable temperature NMR measurements, simulation of NMR speectra to develop appropriate models of ligand exchange, and determination of activation parameters.  Ten students participated in the revised lab curriculum and worked in pairs on their projects.  The successes and challenges of the revised lab curriculum are described.
