The flipped classroom is an emerging technique that gives students the full benefit of active learning by delivering lecture content outside of class then reinforcing content and solving problems during class time. This poster explores another possible benefit of a flipped classroom: the ability to deliver different content to different students simultaneously in a single class period. The chemical instrumentation course poses unique pedagogical and logistical challenges, especially in a liberal arts setting, due to the limited number of instruments available for student use. At our institution, we attempt to solve this problem by rotating groups of students through the different experiments and instruments. Thus, each group is works on different instruments in a given lab period, and the various groups encounter the instruments in different orders. These rotations work well for the laboratory, but are unsatisfactory for the lecture portion of the course. A sequential presentation of concepts, regardless of the method of instruction, will have students learning about an instrument during a different week in the term than their laboratory experiment with that same instrument. To attempt to overcome the inherent difficulties in lecture/lab pairing for an instrumentation course, the author implemented a ‘parallel’ flip, where each student group encounters different classroom content before class, then completes related activities on that content during class. One class period of each four-period rotation is devoted to content that is the same for all groups, allowing for instruction on instruments not present in the laboratory portion of the course, and providing a time to schedule the midterm exam. The parallel flip is instituted for the entire semester, except for the first two weeks when students are completing a common experiment to introduce the concepts of instrumentation. This poster will describe the author’s course design and the students' impressions of the parallel flip instrumentation course.
