A broad spectrum of coordinatively saturated transition metal complexes consisting of both cyclometalating and dative, polyaromatic ligands exhibit desirable photophysical properties. As such, the potential for their use in OLEDs/PHOLEDS and as photocatalysts has inspired vigorous research into both the synthesis of novel ligand platforms and improvement and/or modification of existing protocols for the preparation of the metal complexes themselves. A common challenge in the latter class of reactions is the requirement for long reaction times (often greater than 24 hours reflux) followed by extensive isolation and purification steps. Recently, we have begun to utilize a microwave reactor in order to bring our research program into closer alignment with the tenets of green chemistry as part of a department-wide initiative. As an extension of this effort, we have synthesized a library of iridium (III) complexes using microwave heating, resulting in drastically reduced preparation times compared with conventional heating as reported in the literature. Beginning with compounds of the general formula [Ir(ppy)2(N,N)]+ (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine; N,N = cuproines and substituted quinoxalines), we have expanded the ligand scope and synthesized a range of novel complexes. We will discuss both the procedural details of our versatile synthetic protocol as well as the characterization and photophysical properties of selected complexes.
