Many household items such as glue and paint cause luminol, 5-amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione, to fluorescence.  The responsible substance and the mechanism by which this occurs are currently unreported. In this research project, these interferences have been investigated and focused heavily on enamel based paints to determine which component is causing a false positive, and could potentially be an obstacle in a forensic science setting. Isolation of chemicals and possible explanations for the interferences has been identified.  Confirmation of the responsible substance in certain paint brands was confirmed by qualitative analysis.<br/>
