Sulfonamides hold significant value in organic chemistry, due to their therapeutic properties. These molecules are referred to in the pharmaceutical industry as “sulfa drugs”. Sulfonamides were prepared by the analogous nucleophilic acyl substitution reaction between <i>p</i>-toluenesulfonyl chloride and a variety of amines in the presence of pyridine. The effect from steric and electronic factors of primary, secondary, and heterocyclic amines was investigated. Methods of recrystallization to isolate the pure product, without the use of column chromatography, have been adapted. These methods can be applied to a wide range of sulfonamide products.
