Incorporation of heavier main group elements into functional materials has resulted in significant innovations, for example commercialized CdTe thin-film photovoltaics. The chemistry of tellurium, however, remains extremely limited when compared to the lighter chalcogens, even as the demand and waste stream for this element continue to grow. Our work focuses on understanding the fundamental coordination chemistry of tellurium, specifically the use of redox active benzoquinone ligands which allow access to a wide range of oxidation states available for this element. These compounds will be used towards the advancement of new separations strategies aimed at recovering tellurium from complex mixtures, such as end-of-life photovoltaics.
