Recent attempts at generating Fe(IV) alkylidenes will be described. Novel methods to prepare conventional L<sub>n</sub>M=CHR have been developed and applied to select members of the transition metals (TMs). These will also be addressed and applied to the iron(IV)" case. In the likely event that olefin metathesis active "Fe(IV)" alkylidene catalysts cannot be prepared, a rationale will be presented in the context of Charge Distribution Via Reporters (CDVR), a benchtop method of assessing charge in TMs.
