The installation of renewable energy has been rapid in recent years allowing the decarbonization of power sector. However, further grid penetration of renewable energy is challenged due to the intermittency of renewable electricity. Thus, research efforts are on-going to develop electrochemical energy storage systems such as batteries. One of the key components in electrochemical systems is the electrolyte. For example, in flow batteries it plays an important role in storing energy as dissolved redox active species and delivering them to the electrode. Thus, its stability and energy carrying capacity (energy density) are important for the deployment of electrochemical energy storage systems. Nanoparticle organic hybrid materials (NOHMs) has been developed that can serve as breakthrough electrolytes with concentrations of electrochemically active species that are not achievable in other conventional solvents.<b> </b>Due to the tunability of the constituent polymers, NOHMs can be tailored as versatile electrolyte media for redox flow batteries and other electrochemical systems. NOHMs can be employed as complexing agents of redox active species, increasing their effective concentration in solution and enabling improvements in energy densities. The conductivity of NOHMs-based electrolytes has been measured and compared to pure polymer cases, showing unusually enhanced conductivity for NOHMs mixtures. Thus, synchrotron studies have been performed to investigate unique transport behaviors of NOHMs-based electrolytes as a function of the development of multi-scale hierarchical structures. Diffusion behaviors have been studied employing nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to explore transport behaviors of NOHMs in different fluid mixtures, providing an understanding of their capability to deliver active species to electrode surfaces. The addition of salt even at low concentrations has been found to significantly reduce the viscosity of NOHMs-based mixtures, and this may be due to de-swelling of constituent polymers, as well as their structuring in the form of aggregates facilitating ion transport. The electrochemical behavior of NOHMs-complexed copper (II) species has also been explored, indicating changes into the overall conversion mechanism through stabilization of the copper (I) state. Overall, NOHMs are tunable electrolyte materials that can increase concentrations of electrochemically active species, making them suitable for electrochemical energy storage systems
