Photo-to-thermal conversion is promising in providing energy input to promote the reaction rate. However, traditional heterogeneous ruthenium oxide catalysts cannot utilize the solar energy in high efficiency due to their low optical absorption profile. Herein, we report RuOOH/SiOx hybrid structure with high optical absorption property improved by nanoantenna effect of SiOx nanospheres to promote the reaction rate of selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzyldehyde with 100 % selectivity under the illumination of visible light. The total photo-to-thermal efficiency is finally calculated as 92.47%. Kinetics results prove that the rate promotion is exclusively realized by photothermal effect, which is, in this work, greatly benefitted by the ultra-small size of RuOOH nanoparticles and the unique RuOOH/SiOx hybrid structure. This work expands the palette of hybrid structure composed of metal species and spherical dielectric nanoantenna. By substituting metallic nanoparticles with metal oxides, phonons, instead of hot electrons, play a predominant role in catalysis under the illumination of light.
