Cross-dehydrogenative coupling and related oxidative C–H functionalization reactions of simple arenes constitute highly desirable and more sustainable routes to carbon-carbon bond formation. The typical reliance on stoichiometric organic or metal oxidants, such as Ag(I) or Cu(II) salts, to achieve efficient catalytic turnover compromises the sustainability of these reactions. Aerobic turnover, particularly for reaction of simple arenes, remains challenging. This presentation will discuss the surprising effects of simple and mild Brønsted acid additives on the catalytic performance of palladium-catalyzed non-directed C–H alkenylation reactions of simple arenes under aerobic conditions, which can occur under ambient pressure, mild temperatures, and with arene as limiting reagent.
