Developing a clear understanding of fundamental redox processes in conjugated semiconducting polymers has been challenging in the past. This is primarily due to the generation of various charged species upon doping-dedoping and the mixture of electrochemical processes, involving capacitance and faradaic reactions, that occur at an electrode-electrolyte interface. One of the main barriers for achieving a conclusive interpretation of the redox behavior of conjugated polymers is the lack of controlled measurements on well-defined model systems. In this research, we work towards overcoming this barrier for conjugated donor-acceptor systems, composed of 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene and benzothiadiazole, via the oligomer approach. A family of discrete and monodisperse oligomers are synthesized via C-H activated cross-coupling and evaluated against their polymer counterparts. The oligomers range from 3&lt;n&gt;25 (Mw=1 K to 7 K) and the polymers range from 40-60 units (Mw=10 K to 20 K). This research systematically address the impact of chain length on the electrochemical properties, chain conformation, and electronic energy levels for a redox-rich oligomer-to-polymer series.
