While there have been numerous of the effect of cation complexation stabilizing the zwitterionic states of gas-phase amino acids, work on the negatively-charged analogues is sparse. We present a series of results on halide ion (fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide)-arginine complexes, and discuss the evidence for charge-induced stabilization of the amino-acid zwitterionic state. Gas-phase Arginine is believed to preferentially adopt a canonical neutral structure. Additional results are presented for the nitrate, chlorate and carboxylate anions. The new results will be discussed in the context of previous results which indicated that a single excess electron could stabilize the zwitterionic form of a model amino acid system.
