The purpose of this study is to evaluate a novel lanthanide-porphyrin compound as a potential phototherapeutic agent for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Recently PDT has received a great deal of attention owing to the ability to target tumor tissues selectively.  Novel metal complexes, metalloporphyrins were synthesized using expanded porphyrins - texaporphyrin as ligand for its capability of strong absorbance in the far-red spectral region (700nm � 1000nm).  Metalloporphyrins belong to the second generation of the PDT agents with an inserted metal in the middle of expanded porphyrin ring in order to generate high yield production of long-lived triplet state. Trivalent lanthanides are the metals of choice owing to their abilities to form eight to ten-coordinate when complexed to the prophyrins. This enhanced structural stability suggests the lanthanide metalloporphyrin complexes could be utilized in a range of applications including PDT.
