Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been a focus of attention as chemically stable, relatively nontoxic, inexpensive and highly efficient photocatalyst applicable for a wide array of uses. However, main disadvantage that severely limits its wider use is the large band gap, 3.0 eV and 3.2 eV for rutile and anatase phases, respectively, which requires UV irradiation energy to initiate the oxidation and reduction processes on the TiO2 surface. Doping with various metal and non-metal species narrows the band gap and enables the utilization of doped TiO2 under the artificial visible or solar light for varied applications. The effect of simultaneous co-doping on crystallinity, thermal stability, surface area and porosity as well as surface reactions and photocatalytic activity of TiO2 in the visible light range has been explored and exemplified by facile degradation of methyl orange dye.
