In this work, zirconium dioxide was synthesized by a surfactant self-assembling sol gel preparation route using an environmentally friendly surfactant Tween 20 as structural directing agent and crack inhibitor. The effect of Tween 20 loading in the sol on the structural properties of as-prepared zirconium dioxide was investigated using XRD, HRTEM, SEM, UV-vis spectroscopy and N2 adsorption and desorption. Electrochemical responses to neurotransmitters (i.e. catechol and dopamine) for the sono-gel carbon electrode modified by the as-prepared zirconium dioxide were characterized by Cyclic Voltammetry (CV).  It was shown that mesoporous zirconium dioxide film synthesized by such a preparation method with an optimum Tween 20 loading is a promising electrode material for the modified sono-gel carbon electrode on the detection of neurotransmitters. Detailed information on crystalline structure, particle size, optical properties, pore structure as well as the electrochemical response to the neurotransmitters catechol and dopamine of such electrodes will be presented.
