We synthesize artificial oligomeric peptides that use metal coordination based self-assembly to form double stranded duplexes. Building off of a poly(aminoethylgylcine) (aeg) backbone allows for the attachment of pendant ligands in preprogrammed arrangements to control coordination. Artificial peptides with palindromic sequences offer a unique approach toward making metal binding duplexes that minimize potential isomer and polymer formation. Bipyridine (bpy) substituted artificial tripeptides are synthesized using a solution phase �center-out� bilateral addition of monomeric units, and duplexes were formed upon addition of various Cu2+ salts. (Confirmed by UV-visible spectrometry, mass spectrometry, and HPLC) Spectrophotometric titrations established stoichiometry, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy identified the coordination geometry around copper centers. The effects of anion coordination to Cu centers were probed by spectrophotometric titrations with different salts. Understanding the different structures formed is necessary for future work exploiting the function of these systems including potential catalytic applications or as molecular wires.
