Amidines have recently gathered a considerableamount of attention in studies due to their potential to have reversibleassociations with carbon dioxide (CO2).  These reactions conversely cause changes inthe material properties of molecules due to a formation of an amidinium-carboxylate or carbonate salt.  Wedemonstrate in this work a novel, facile route to implement these moleculesinto methacrylate polymers through the use of surfactant free emulsionpolymerization.  Furthermore, the approachwe follow permits the ability to scale up production of a precursor emulsionpolymer and test many different combinations of amidine moieties starting fromone precursor polymer.  Conversely, weanticipate on utilizing this spectrum of amidine variations, as well as thevolume fraction of monomers, in order to tailor the material properties ofthese polymers such as modulus, adhesion, and wetting properties.
