Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are compounds that are used for flame-retardants and have a wide variety of uses.  Previous research has shown the PBDEs can form hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-BDEs) in wastewater treatment plants during chlorine disinfection and activated sludge treatment. OH-BDEs structure has been shown to form polybromodiphenyl dioxins (PBDDs) when photolyzed.  The photodecomposition of 6-OH-BDE 90 in buffered waters, Mississippi River water and Lake Josephine water and deionized pH adjusted water was studied to determine if PBDD is a photoproduct of ortho-hydroxylated tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (6-OH-BDE 90).  Photolysis experiments were performed under natural sunlight at 45�N latitude.  Chemical actinometry was used to determine the quantum yield for all solutions.   The final results will be presented.
