Voltammetric detection of barium has usually been accomplished by polarography or by stripping analysis. The electrode has typically been a dropping mercury electrode or a hanging electrolyte drop electrode. Stripping analysis with a mercury film electrode for the detection of barium has not been widely accomplished. Using a previous technique for detection of barium from gunshot residue, differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) has been applied for determination of barium from oil well water samples. Ba is a cause of corrosion in oil wells. The water samples come from Oklahoma oil wells that have been under waterflood. The development of this technique for detection of Ba from oil well water samples will be discussed. Included in this discussion are such factors as electrolytic solutions (different electrolytes and different concentrations), pulse amplitude, scan rate, and deposition time. The DPASV technique allows for detection of Ba that is simple and non-destructive.
