Metalloproteins catalyze biochemical reactions essential to Earth's geochemical cycles. These include carbon fixation, sulfur cycling, nitrogen cycling and organic matter degradation. In the ocean, the availability of metals required for these reactions (Fe, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, etc.) can be exceedingly low, and the analytical challenges associated with their detection are considerable. As a result, there are many unanswered questions about the implications of oceanic metal scarcity for biogeochemical cycles. Advances in mass spectrometry-based proteomic analyses and in-situ large volume oceanic water column sampling methodologies have enabled novel types of inquiry into the roles of marine metalloproteins. Here we present results showing that metal-containing protein distributions and expression patterns can yield insight into the roles of metal scarcity in oceanic biogeochemical processes.
