The purpose of the study is to analyze metal content in short- and long-lived clams (bivalve molluscs) using ICP-MS to test whether long-lived clams have the ability to lower the accumulation of metals, particularly Cu, Fe, Cd and Al compared to short-lived clams as these metals elevate oxidative stress, i.e. free toxic radicals (oxygen and hydroxyl radicals). Weighed amounts of different species of clam samples are homogenized in presence of deionized water followed by centrifugation at 100,000 g for 1 hr at 4 �C. The supernatants are collected and boiled at 100 �C for 15 min followed by centrifugation at 100,000 g for 15 min to remove protein components. The supernatant is then acidified with nitric acid and made to volume to ensure <2% nitric acid concentration and then mixed and centrifuged or allowed to settle overnight. The metal content of the samples are then analyzed by ICP-MS using Varian 820-MS model.
