Although the presence of stibines in environmental compartments has been documented, very little is known regarding environmental processes leading to the formation of these species. Environmental antimony concentrations are typically low and pre-concentration prior to analysis is required. Both chemo- and cryotrapping methods have been employed. Cryotrapping can have significant interferences when other gases such as carbon dioxide are also trapped. Speciation is rarely preserved in chemotrapping. A silica gel/AgNO3 trapping method with speciation preservation has been reported for arsenic. Here, we refine and evaluate that method for antimony trapping. Stibine was generated via hydride-generation from a potassium antimony tartrate solution and the trapping efficiency of the AgNO3/silica gel materials was determined.
