Carbon monoxide (CO) is a member of a group of gaseous signaling molecules known as gasotransmitters.  Detecting this gas in vivo is important in understanding its physiological functions; however, there is no method for selectively doing so.  Electrochemical detection is attractive due to the high accuracy; however, due to limitations in current gas permeable membranes and electrode materials, the selective oxidation of CO gas in the presence of other gasotransmitters is not possible.  One solution is to modify the working electrode with an electrocatalyst.  Rhodium porphyrins have been shown to have good response towards carbon monoxide.  However, electrochemical disproportionation, has been commonly reported among rhodium porphyrins.  Inhibiting disproportionation of the porphyrin is imperative for using it in sensing applications.  This research investigates the suitability of surface-bound rhodium protoporphyrin in order to selectively oxidize CO over NO and H2S after overcoming the problems caused by disproportionation.
