Magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) have shown promise for hyperthermic cancer treatment. However, biocompatibilty is essential in delivery of particles to the tumor. Human serum albumin (HSA) nanoparticles provide a biocompatible delivery platform that can be surface modified for selective delivery to tumor cells.  Encapsulation of MNP in HSA allows delivery of the MNP to the selected target. The HSA nanoparticles can be loaded with chemotherapy agents for multimodal treatment.  A range of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (10-30 nm) were embedded into HSA nanoparticles (~100 nm).  Transmission electron microscopy images showed a relatively uniform distribution of the MNPs in the HSA particles.  Fluorescent molecules were also incorporated into the HSA nanoparticles as surrogate drug molecules.  Heating of the composite particles in an applied AC magnetic field was monitored over a range of applied field strengths, frequencies, and exposure times.  Release of the fluorophore was monitored to understand kinetics of drug release.
