Known for over a century, the thiol-ene reaction is the radical based but well-behaved anti-Markovnikov addition of thiol S-H bonds across carbon-carbon double bonds to produce thioethers.  The reaction, which is highly selective and which can be initiated thermally or photochemically, routinely gives excellent yields of products.  Better still, it is synthetically orthogonal to many types of organic functional groups, making it ideal as a means for preparing functionalized or 'task-specific' ionic liquids.  In this presentation, we will discuss our experience using this reaction to prepare a number of familiar and novel IL types, ranging from highly functionalized ILs to new lipidic ILs, and we will share detailed information on best practices in its employment.
