Borane ligands impart unique electronic effects when coordinated to transition metals. When brought into a the coordination sphere boranes may behave as sigma acceptor ligands, where the empty 2p orbital on boron forms a bonding interaction with a doubly-occupied transition-metal-centered orbital, if available. It is, therefore, not surprising that low-valent late transition metals are known to be stabilized by the electron accepting character of boranes. We are investigating the effect of metal oxidation state on the coordination properties of borane ligands with the goal of developing catalysts for organic transformations derived from earth-abundant metals in unusually low formal oxidation states. The results of these studies will be the theme of this poster.
