In ocean waters, boron has a relatively high concentration of 0.4 mM.   Since marine life thrives in this environment, it suggests that marine  organisms may have adapted to the presence of high boron  concentrations.  Nevertheless boron's role in the metabolism of marine  organisms, although potentially important, is not well known.  Using a  combined proteomic/genomic analysis we have recently discovered that  the expression of a number of proteins and genes are affected by the  extracellular boron concentration in the marine bacterium Marinobacter algicola.   Among the protein/genes most strongly affected by boron were those  involved in the uptake of iron.  Here we report on the details of these  investigations.
