A poryphrin ring is an aromatic structure containing a poryphrin base structure and various R groups.  Varying the R groups enables poryphrin with different characteristics to be investigated.  Modification of a poryphrin ring can be performed by the addition of 4 R groups to the poryphrin structure during synthesis.  This project entails the synthesis, purification, and testing for photodynamic therapy of the poryphrin with attached R group TPPSO.  The purpose of this research is to determine the best R groups on poryphrins for use as agents in photodynamic therapy.  Poryphrins are being utilized in many dimensions of research in the medical field. Within this project, photodynamic therapy involved treatment of cell lines HeLa and NIH3T3 which are human cervical cancer cells and mouse fibroblasts, respectively with varying concentrations of the poryphrin H2TPPSO.  The treated cells are then exposed to light in order to determine the effectiveness of H2TPPSO in photodynamic treatment.
