The University of Tennessee at Martin SMACS received two grants to carry out activities focusing on all four themes of the International Year of Chemistry. The grants this year included: An IYC Focus on Green Energy and Sustainable Quality Environment, UTM SMACS network with local schools for a tour of Oak Ridge Museum and the Graphite Reactor, and A Focus on Hazards of Radiation and Unsafe Drug Disposal. The activities included four speakers, a plant tour of a winery where the only source of electricity was solar power and whose owner does research on fuel cells, YouTube interviews, an Award winning display at the campus homecoming, and the IYC T-shirts.  Outreach involved networking with a number of other organizations such as Mu Epsilon Delta, Tri-Beta, the University's Honors Academic  Speaker program. The speakers included the medical/technical director Dr. Albert Wiley of the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS) at Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) who is also head of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center at Oak Ridge, an environmentalist, and professors from Vanderbilt University, Murray State University, and the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy.
