The incorporation of boron atoms into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons leads to enhanced luminescence and charge-transport properties, which can be exploited for applications in organic solar cells and light-emitting devices.A broad variety of 2  -type compounds with electron withdrawing (e.g., Mes2B) or electron donating (e.g., Tol2N) substituents R have been synthesized. The anthracene moieties are oriented orthogonal to the 9,10-dihydro-9,10-diboraanthracene skeleton so that efficient charge transfer can occur upon electronic excitation.
