Community college students in General Chemistry I were given a pre-test and a posttest to assess their change in understanding of concepts found in General Chemistry I such as conversions, density, naming, and balancing equations.  Supplemental instruction was provided and focused on increasing the students' understanding of key concepts necessary to be successful in General Chemistry I.   General Chemistry II classes were also given a pre-test and a posttest containing a mixture of concepts taught during General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II to assess their knowledge at the beginning and end of the semester.   Supplemental Instruction (SI) was provided to enhance student understanding of concepts taught in General Chemistry II such as kinetics, acids and bases, equilibrium, and solubility. Other intended outcomes for general chemistry included improving students' problem solving abilities and increasing depth of understanding.  Practice with log functions, algebraic manipulations, and calculators improved student success.
