A modular approach towards the synthesis of metal coordination polymer networks (MCPN) was developed.  First, 4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine-4-carboxylic acid was attached to bis(3-aminopropyl) terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) with EDCI coupling.  Successful coupling was confirmed by 1H NMR and GPC.  Cross-linking was achieved by introducing Ru(DMSO)4Cl2 to solutions of the bipyridine terminated PDMS.  Over time, solution absorbance at ~450 nm increased indicating the formation Ru(bpy)32+ complex in solution which was accompanied by the formation of a dark red gel indicative of MCPN formation.
