Several useful approaches to (hyper)branched polymers derived from vinyl monomers will be illustrated, including the copolymerization of monovinyl with small amounts of di- or multivinyl monomers i) under controlled/living radical polymerization conditions, or ii) in the presence of efficient chain transfer agents, or by using iii) �self-condensing vinyl polymerization�, which employs inimers. To incorporate internal functional groups in (hyper)branched polymers, di- or multivinyl monomers containing the desired functionality is used in the first two methods, or functional inimers are employed in method iii. The synthesis of branched molecules with internal redox-active (disulfide or viologen) groups will be illustrated. To introduce peripheral functional groups in (hyper)branched macromolecules, end group postpolymerization modifications can be employed, e.g., efficient �click� reactions. The introduction of peripheral azide groups for �click� functionalizations or of initiating sites for further polymerizations that yield star-shaped polymers with (hyper)branched cores will be presented.
