Polypropylene films were modified with 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate Mn = 1100 (OEGMA) by one step method using pre-irradiation with gamma-rays. These monomers have been used to improve the biocompatibility of certain materials especially for the reduction of thrombus formation. The effect of absorbed dose, temperature, monomer concentration, monomers ratio and reaction time on the grafting degree was determined. The grafted samples were verified by the FTIR-ATR, TGA, DSC, swelling, and contact angle. Grafts onto polymeric films between 4 and 84 % were obtained at doses from 10 to 100 kGy and a dose rate around 7.4 kGy/h. Rate initiation was determined by pre-irradiation dose and reaction temperature. Equilibrium swelling in distillated water was very slow, the maximum was reached in about ten days; contact angle also showed that modified polymers have a good hydrophilicity. These features make these materials attractive for biomedical applications.
