In order to rationally develop single-molecule magnets, we have designed the ligand triplesalen, that combines the ferromagnetic coupler 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene (phloroglucinol) for the generation of high spin ground states St with the coordination environment of a salen ligand to introduce magnetic anisotropy. The supramolecular assembly of two triplesalen complexes with one hexacyano-metallate results in the family of single-molecule magnets [Mt6Mc]n+ .[1-3] This unprecedented supramolecular system based on the key-lock principle allows to identify pitfalls and to optimize the system by the controlled variation of the molecular building blocks.
