The Recycled Water Policy amended in 2011 by the State of California calls for development of bioanalytical tools to more efficiently screen for known and unknown chemicals in recycled water used to recharge groundwater aquifers.  Successfully developed tools shall address exposure/health concerns due to trace contaminant residuals in recycled water and shall be amenable to commercialization and widespread use by non-research oriented personnel.  Our investigative team will survey the best available in vitro bioassay technology, perform optimization of selected candidates and water extraction protocols, and characterize bioassay performance against spiked and real water samples.  The final step in this process will be to provide guidance on protocols and data interpretation for those bioassays that demonstrate acceptable performance to ensure that the technology is transferable to water recycling practitioners.
