Hyperpolarized 1-13C dehydroascorbate (DHA) was developed as an MR-compatible redox sensor.  The two-electron reduction of 1-13C DHA to 1-13C Vitamin C (VitC) was observed both in vitro and in a murine model, with rapid conversion in the brain, liver, kidneys, and tumor seen by 3D magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI).  These findings indicate that concentrations of reducing agents (notably glutathione) can be determined non-invasively.
