Carbon-supported iron catalysts were synthesized by wet impregnation method and treated using two different thermal treatments: Plasma Torch and Oven Treatment in Nitrogen. Catalysts were characterized with assistance of a Scanning Electron Microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope, X-Ray Diffraction and Chemisorption with CO. Finally, catalyst's activity was tested on the degradation of the pollutant Orange II, finding that Oven treatment catalysts showed better Orange II removal, in spite of the higher Iron distribution showed by Plasma Torch catalysts. HPLC analysis of the oxidation products demonstrated that Iron particles are not catalytically active, as well as sites on the carbon act as oxidation/reduction catalyst sites.
