A series of regenerated cellulose films (lyophan) prepared using the same route as in the production of the Lyocell fibres,  the NMMO technology,  with various cellulose sources and under varied shaped conditions were uniaxially drawn by extrusion causing the cellulose chains to align to the direction of orientation. A close relation process, structure and mechanical properties of cellulose films has been investigated by measuring the water content dependency of X-ray diffraction spectrum and mechanical properties. Studied ranges of relative humidity were 11, 33, 54, 86 and 97 % R. H., respectively. Mechanical properties of lyophan films proved to change dramatically with humidity. Water was considered to play a role as a plasticizer.Differences in morphology and supramolecular structure (crystallinity, lateral dimensions of crystallites) for the investigated lyophan film types were demonstrated. Correlations between the orientation of crystallites and the mechanical properties of the films have been observed.
