Availability is the basic challenge in integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) due to slag buildup in the gasifier and fouling in the syngas cooler.  The fouling could be caused by the molten/sticky fly ash.  The viscosity of slag is used to characterize slag flow behavior and is the dominating factor that determines the ash particle sticking probability.  Deposition of the ash particles on the walls of the gasifier is also a function of carbon conversion that is affected by the operating conditions.  Changes in the coal result in changing the quantity and composition of ash, which consequently cause changes in the flow of the slag inside the gadifier, as well as in the downstream processing.  This study discusses the effects of ash properties, coal conversion, and flux on the slag flow behavior and suggests the coal quality criteria and operating conditions for use in entrained flow slagging gasifiers.
