We have developed a series of new homogeneous silanediol catalysts  that exhibit unique hydrogen-bonding properties. Silica gel is known to  promote a variety of carbon-carbon bond forming reactions where the  activity is attributed to the enhancement of surface silanols through a  network of cooperative hydrogen-bonding. Silanediols provide a  homogeneous model system through which we can better understand the  surface interactions of heterogeneous catalyst analogs. Structural,  co-crystallization, and NMR studies demonstrate the importance of  self-recognition to provide a more active, dimeric catalyst with  enhanced hydrogen-bonding. Discussion will focus on molecular insights  and structural features for catalyst design.
