Aerosol particles impact Earth's radiation budget directly through the scattering and absorption of incident radiation and indirectly through perturbation of cloud albedo and lifetime.  In addition, aerosol particles provide surface area to catalyze reactions that are energetically unfavorable in the gas-phase.  To date, the vast majority of our understanding of atmospheric heterogeneous chemistry comes from detailed laboratory and theoretical studies.  Connecting these studies with coarse grain regional and/or global climate models requires the distillation of complex chemical mechanisms into robust parameterizations without sacrificing content.  Here, we explore the use of in situ studies of heterogeneous reactions, conducted on both ambient aerosol particles and chemically complex aerosol particles generated in a novel air-sea wave channel, to provide quantitative linkages between the laboratory and global models.
