Triosmium cluster 1,2-Os3(CO)10(CH3CN)2 (1) reacts with the bidentate ligand 1,2-p-tolylS(C6H4)PPh2 (2) at room temperature to give the ligand-chelated product Os3(CO)10[1,2-p-tolylS(C6H4)PPh2] (3).  The observed crystal structure of this cluster provides evidence that the ligand does not bridge adjacent osmium centers, but instead binds to a single metal at the axial and equatorial positions.  The polynuclear cluster has been characterized in solution by infrared and NMR spectroscopy, and in the solid state by X-ray crystallography.  This experimental data agree with the DFT computed energetics for the different isomeric clusters.
