The literature on biomass research contains many references to lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCC) decreasing the rate of delignification in chemical pulp production.  An attempt is being made to develop correlations between initial LCC concentration and woody biomass delignification rates, utilizing enzymatically isolated lignin. Reproducible determinations of bound sugars at monomeric concentrations as low as 0.3 wt% on enzymatic lignin (EL) have been made possible by 1H NMR analyses of EL hydrolyzates in 25 � 40 wt% H2SO4 solutions. Well resolved cross-peaks assigned to benzyl ethers have been obtained in 2D HSQC NMR analyses of the EL. It has been observed that the EL from hardwood soda-AQ (SAQ) pulp contained ~30% more benzyl ethers linked to primary-OH groups in sugar units than the corresponding EL from an equivalent kraft pulp. For both pulps, the number of benzyl linkages with the primary-OH of arabinofuranose units appeared to be much higher than in previous reports.
