Aryl-heteroatom bond forming reactions are among the most important methods used in the synthesis of numerous compounds in the biological, material, and pharmaceutical sciences. Discrete, molecular palladium and copper metal-ligand complexes are often employed, but supported or soluble palladium nanoparticles and copper oxide nanoparticles have also been employed. Whereas palladium catalysts are often more active, copper-based catalysts are cheaper and less toxic. Developing a stable heterogeneous catalyst would offer numerous advantages over the homogeneous ones, facilitating catalyst recoverability and recyclability, and thus lowering processing cost. This work shows that CuO supported on mesoporous CeO2 prepared by wet impregnation can be used as a catalyst for the N-arylation reaction. This ligand-free, environmentally friendly catalyst shows comparable activity to homogeneous CuO nanoparticles, with the advantage of being mostly recoverable and recyclable, although some copper leaching into solution occurs. The impact of the added base on the performance and selectivity of this catalyst is also described.
