N-alkyl urea peptoids are oligomeric biomimetic molecules that can be thought of as hybrids between oligoureas, N-acyl glycines (peptoids) and 2-? peptides.  By virtue of their iterative synthesis strategy a wide variety of functional side chains can be incorporated and the urea functionality facilitates hydrogen bonding leading to self-assembly properties.  This presentation will describe the use of N-alky urea peptoid oligomers in the synthesis of polymers using a step-growth polymerization strategy.  The afforded macromolecules have been used as multifunctional backbones for comb type copolymers, where the polymers extending from the poly(N-alkyl urea peptoid) backbone have been prepared using a �grafting from� reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization.  It is anticipated that these systems will have a range of applications arising from the combination of a pseudo-polypeptide backbone and controlled polymeric arms.
