A new series of fluorescent dipyrrinone analogs were synthesized and characterized for their liquid crystal properties.  The synthesis was accomplished in four synthetic steps from commercially available materials in moderate to high yields.  The fluorescence in the different phases, as indicated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry, has been studied.  Fluorescence was induced by pumping the sample with 355 nm radiation from a frequency-tripled pulsed Nd:Yag laser and was analyzed with a monochromator and a fast oscilloscope, over a temperature range of  25-60oC. The synthesis and characterization of these new fluorescent dipyrrinone liquid crystal systems will be presented.
